Seriously, if looks could kill, you would not need bullets. This is a beautiful long range tactical rifle that won’t break the bank or leave the kids without Christmas presents.
So what is this rifle all about? It’s about putting some of the best proven concepts together to create a long range tactical rifle that is within range of your wallet. Available in .308, .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua Magnum, the rifle platform is modular, allowing to you equip it and then adapt it as your needs demand. Having spent most of this year working on a high end rebuild of an old Remington 700 into a top shelf precision rifle, we were a little surprised to see the Remington 700 Tactical Chassis Rifle with an MSRP starting at just $2,900. You could pay several times that for a rifle in this category, but hey, the kids still want Christmas presents!
Maybe you’re wondering what you’re giving up at that price point. Features? Accuracy? I’ll admit to skepticism at first, but I was prepared to be surprised. Let’s look at some of the keys to a precision rife build that works for you, not some pro shooter or factory guru.
When you want a precision long range tac driver, you don’t just go to the local big box store and buy whatever they have on the shelf that day. You do your research and find a rifle purpose built for that. A true long range precision gun is built from the ground up for mounting high quality optics, and you can forget the traditional stock that was originally designed for open sights. Your long-range rifle will be adaptable to work with virtually any accessories you want, from bi-pods to clip-on thermal or night vision. It will have a quality trigger that can be adjusted to suit you. It needs a good barrel, and that barrel should be free floated. The pieces must be put together properly. There’s nothing like having awesome parts that aren’t put together well. Your rifle will be adjustable so it fits you just right. As with any investment, it should come from a company with a solid track record. In short, quality, adaptability, customization and precision operation are required to enter the long range rifle league.
Like a Swiss watch, Remington delivers the goods with the 700 Tactical Chassis Rifle. The build starts with the proven Remington 700 action paired with a varmint profile barrel. Ours is a .308 with a six groove 1:10 twist 24 inch barrel. The barreled action is Cerakoted black and mounted in a MDT Tac 21 Chasis. The user adjustable X-Mark Pro trigger is factory set for 3.5 pounds. A Magpul PRS fully adjustable stock comes on one end, and AAC 51-T Ratchet Mount Muzzle Break caps the other. And did I mention this is a good looking rifle?
One of the keys to this firearm is the MDT chassis. It’s not like Beauty and the Beast. It’s more like Beauty is the Beast. This is a gorgeous chassis, made of Mil-Spec Type III hard anodized aluminum. It has a full length top rail with 20 MOA in the action section to provide adequate adjustment for your scope when shooting at long range, but is parallel to the barrel on the fore-end. Our .308 model uses AICS {Accuracy International Chassis System} type magazines holding five or ten rounds each. The chassis uses a system that accepts AR style butt stocks and pistol grips so you can customize it. The stock can be easily removed and swapped out in seconds with the standard adapter.
We mentioned a great precision rifle should be built around mounting high quality optics so we topped this rifle with a Nightforce 3.5-15×50 NXS scope with a MOAR reticle. If you’ve been keeping up with our “Grandpa’s Gun Reborn” story, you know we love this scope and you know why. We also mounted a Harris bi-pod to keep the 700 Tactical Chassis Rifle stable.
So how does it shoot? To find out, we took the Remington 700 Tactical Chassis Rifle straight to a precision rifle class with Bill Davison at Tac Pro Shooting Center. Bill is an exacting instructor. When you finish his class, you will be shooting clay pigeons at 1,000 yards if you’re a decent student and your rifle is capable. If we can do it, you probably can too and there is only one way to find out – go try it!
Once Bill helped us get zeroed, I noticed immediately how smooth the trigger was, and how crisp its break. Having dry-fired it before the class, I knew I would like it, but the results really do show up when you pull the trigger on a loaded chamber. Like finding money in an old birthday card, it caught me by surprise when I pulled it. There’s no creep and it breaks cleanly at three and a half pounds on our scale. With some help from Bill, we dialed in a precise zero, adjusting the Magpul PRS stock to fit so I could get my cheek weld just right. The AAC muzzle break helped me recover my sight picture as it takes the bite out of the recoil and will also accommodate an AAC suppressor.
Day two class has been rescheduled because of an excess of sloppy mud on the range. I know what you’re thinking here about hogs and mud but 1000 yards of going down range in the slop just did not feel like fun!
My best three shot group so far is 1/3 MOA at one hundred yards using .308 Remington Premier Match 168 grain Matchking BTHP Ammo. That’s pretty good in my book, especially considering that I’m new to the precision rifle game. I’m looking forward to seeing how it does when we return to Tac Pro for day two, and we’ll be sure to keep you on the inside track. This isn’t the end of the story. It’s just the beginning.
