Big news of the big bore type from a big player in the AR platform rifle world – Daniel Defense is releasing their DD5V1 7.62 Rifle October 23rd. From the looks of it, they’ve done some serious engineering on their .308 AR-10 type rifle. How’s this for starters? No barrel nut! That can be a hefty part and it’s gone! More on that in a minute, but let’s start here: Like you, I’ve owned and passed along my share of guns and have had a couple of Daniel Defense rifles in 5.56 and 6.8 SPC come and go. They were solid guns, but something else newer and flashy caught my eye so away they went. With this entry into the 7.62 x 51mm NATO (.308) platform, I think there’s genuinely something to be excited about. Naturally, so does Daniel Defense CEO Marty Daniel.
“I couldn’t be happier with the way this rifle turned out,” said Daniel Defense President & CEO Marty Daniel. “Our engineers utilized existing technology where appropriate and developed entirely new designs when necessary to optimize the performance of this gold-standard rifle. Those who demand legendary Daniel Defense quality and the increased range and terminal ballistics of 7.62mm ammo are going to be very pleased with this rifle.”
Back to that missing barrel nut… Here’s what Daniel Defense is saying about their DD5V1 7.62 Rifle.
• Innovative 4-bolt connection system securely attaches free-floating CHF barrel and KeyMod handguard mounts securely to upper without a barrel nut
• Bolt and carrier designed with oversized cam pin, enhanced extractor geometry, and dual ejectors
• Ambidextrous safety selector, magazine catch, bolt release, and configurable modular charging handle
• Lower receiver features integral oversized trigger guard and flared magazine well for SR-25 type magazines
• Geissele SSA 2-Stage Trigger with its smooth 2.5 lb take-up and clean 2 lb break
Two stage Geissele trigger! Nice finishing touch!
And the rest of the early story goes like this:
16″ chrome chrome moly vanadium steel cold hammer forged, chrome lined barrel. That’s a mouthful. The profile is Daniel Defense’s own S2W®, short for “Strength to weight.” The DD5V1 7.62 barrel has a 1:11″ twist rate and uses a Daniel Defense Superior Suppression Device designed to mitigate both muzzle flash and rise. It’s 15″ hand guard has a full length top picatinny rail and key mod slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. Of course it has Daniel Defense’s signature furniture including pistol grip and butt stock. The total package weighs in at 8.3 pounds unloaded.
If you’re aching to get one, you won’t have to wait long. The DD5V1 7.62 becomes available for purchase beginning October 23rd from authorized Daniel Defense dealers or directly from Daniel Defense at danieldefense.com Innovation is never cheap and the big gun carries an MSRP of $2,899.
